Hands-on exposure for second-year Tax students

Posted on October 13, 2017

The second-year Taxation students completed an assignment aimed at simulating the process of registering an individual for tax and completing the e-filing of an individual taxpayer. As part of their tasks, the students received letters from their “clients” (scenarios of five different people) who needed help with their tax matters and scheduled 15-minutes interviews for each, during which the student (acting as a tax practitioner) obtained the information they needed to assist the client to register for tax and complete their tax return.

The interviews took place on 7 and 8 September 2017 in the Rautenbach Hall on the Hatfield Campus. Students came dressed up in their formal attire, looking professional and ready to interview their clients. The clients were portrayed by future tax employers, who came directly from practice to facilitate the interviews. These future tax employers were trainees, managers and partners from firms like Deloitte, PwC, PKF, BDO, Sizwe Ntsaloba Gobodo, Nkonki, Briteworx and representatives from the Tax Department at UP.

It was a fun, exciting and very beneficial experience. The students loved it and enjoyed being exposed to real-life experiences which they will face when they enter the professional world. One of the future tax employers said: “It is a good start for the students to understand how things work in the workplace, it teaches them interpersonal, presentation, communication and time management skills which are vital skills to have in the professional environment.
