Feral cats

The University of Pretoria has approximate 150 feral cats on all the campuses. The university opted for the Trap-Neuter-Return programme to manage the feral cat colonies on the various campuses. The aim of the programme is to ensure that the current population of feral cats on the campuses of the university does not explode and create a burden on the surrounding biosphere. The Trap-Neuter-Return method must then be supplemented with a feeding programme. Feral cats receive 100g dry cat food every second day of the week; this is to ensure that they will continue to hunt rodents on the campuses. It is important not to over feed the adult ferals to ensure that they do not completely lose the hunting instinct.
