Social Responsibility

The University of Pretoria has a comprehensive strategy for managing its carbon footprint and addressing climate change, with the goal of achieving climate neutrality. The University developed a strategic framework that aligns reduction targets with international commitments, such as the Paris Agreement, prioritising areas like renewable energy integration and sustainable procurement. Ultimately, the goal is to embed sustainability into the University’s culture through capacity-building initiatives, while fostering innovation and resilience in the face of future climate-related risks.

The University of Pretoria has a range of governance frameworks that guide and assist in realising its sustainability agenda. The Department of Facilities Management supports the University's efforts to create a reimagined University. In 2023, the University completed its first comprehensive audit of Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas emissions, ensuring that all sources of these gases are systematically accounted for and reported.
