Since 2015 the University of Pretoria has held a twice annual bird census event at the Hillcrest sport campus. These events are held during spring and winter to compare bird numbers and species. The initial bird census was triggered by the rehabilitation of the Hartebeestspruit in 2015. Initially, the bird census events were held to establish what species was available prior to the rehabilitation. It then changed to a seasonal event where summer and winter species were compared.
