The 22nd European Conference on Literacy took place in Dublin, Ireland, from 4-6th July 2022,
alongside the 46th Annual Conference of the Literacy Association of Ireland. The conference was jointly organised by the Federation of European Literacy Associations and The Literacy Association of Ireland. Dr. Renata Eccles and Prof Jeannie van der Linde from the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology presented two papers at the conference. Their presentations were based on the research studies conducted by Dr. Eccles for her doctoral thesis, where Prof van der Linde was her main supervisor. The focus of the thesis was the potential contribution of music instruction to foundational literacy development in young children. The presented papers were The effect of music instruction on phonological awareness and early literacy skills of five- to seven-year-old children and Is phonological awareness related to pitch, rhythm, and speech-in-noise discrimination in young children? The presentations were well received by the attending audience made up of academics from a variety of fields and early childhood educators. Dr. Renata Eccles and Prof Jeannie van der Linde enjoyed attending the high-quality presentations that focused on numerous pertinent topics regarding literacy abilities for people of all ages, especially young children.
