Bridging Communication Barriers: Collaboration Between Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology and UP’s Security Services

Everyday interactions can become daunting for individuals living with communication disorders. Tasks as routine as passing through campus security can escalate into stressful situations, especially for those facing hearing loss, voice or fluency disorders, and other neuro-communicative challenges.

Recognizing this need, the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at the University of Pretoria launched an innovative collaboration with UP’s Security Services. Spearheaded by final-year students under the supervision of Isabel Schimper, the initiative aimed to enhance accessibility and inclusivity on campus.

The result? A specially designed access card that discreetly supports individuals with communication disorders during interactions with campus security. This simple yet powerful tool helps reduce anxiety and fosters smoother, more respectful communication exchanges.

By working hand-in-hand with UP’s security staff, this initiative demonstrates how cross-departmental partnerships can create meaningful change, empowering students and clients while promoting awareness and empathy.

A big thank you to our dedicated security staff for their openness and commitment to inclusivity. Your role in creating a supportive campus environment is deeply valued.
