The Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology raises awareness among BSc students

Posted on August 21, 2018

Students and staff from the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology set out to the Mamelodi campus on 18 July 2018, to market what the exciting professions of speech-language therapy and audiology has to offer. These professions are considered by Forbes (www.forbes.com) as the “Best health care jobs” and “Least stressful jobs”.

The audience was first year BSc – Extended Programme students who are following courses as a bridge between high school and university. Students from the Biological stream apply at the Faculty of Health Sciences, and once selected they leave the BSc programme at the end of the first year. The aim of our visit was to encourage students to apply for Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology.

The presentation was well attended at the Arena and students were keen to hear what the degrees entailed – something totally new for some that did not even know that these professions exist. Four undergraduate students shared their stories on how they all embarked on their individual journeys of advocacy for those with speech, language, communication and hearing difficulties. Students highlighted how they have grown to enjoy their course so much. The presentation went very well and a number of students asked questions after; eager to know how they could become prospective students for 2019.

We hope to see all of their faces in the coming year embarking on their journey to becoming the best speech-language therapists and audiologists South Africa has to offer!

Thank you to Prof Ogude (Dean of Mamelodi Campus) and Jeanine Mwambakana (Administrator of Extended Programmes) for all their assistance!
