The first African Interprofessional Education Network (AfrIPEN) was recently held in Windhoek, Namibia. There were 35 delegates from a number of African countries including South Africa, Kenya, Botswana, Namibia, Malawi and Ghana.
There were seven South African universities present including, University of Pretoria, University of the Western Cape, University of Stellenbosch, North West University, Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, The University of the Free State and the University of the Witwatersrand. Five staff members from various departments of UP were present including Renata Mosca (Speech-Language Pathology), Pippa Bresser and Mable Kekana (Radiography), Maretha Bekker (Occupational Therapy) and Carin Maree (Nursing).
The symposium focused on a wide range of aspects concerning interprofessional collaboration, education and learning. Many presentations highlighted perspectives of students, clinicians and families. Curriculum development was a main focus of the discussions and as was the need to start generating research from Africa. For more information, you can follow AfrIPEN on Facebook and Twitter.
