Limits on Music Festival Sound Levels

Posted on February 10, 2011

Prof Bart Vinck, the new Head of Department in Communication Pathology at the University of Pretoria, recently moved from the University of Ghent in Belgium where he actively promoted stricter legislation for maximum allowed levels of noise at music festivals. This was prompted after his research demonstrated that the noise levels at these concerts may reach levels that cause noise-induced hearing loss. In recent weeks legislation was finally passed to reduce the permitted noise levels at music festivals in Belgium.

In his new position at the University of Pretoria Prof Vinck hopes to promote safe noise levels in South African recreational and occupational settings.
