Conversation Group Open Evening 2012

Posted on October 17, 2012

The program presented our group projects for this year in the form of commentary by the student facilitators, and video clips which very realistically highlighted the activities of the group members. These focused on creating awareness, and reducing the pervasive obstacles for individuals living with aphasia and CCD.

A further highlight of our evening was a live SKYPE call with Professors Ellen Bernstein-Ellis and Janet Patterson and their ATP Group members and student clinicians at California State University, East Bay in San Francisco, whom we’ve collaborated with on various clinical research projects over a number of years. We felt as if we were all sitting together in the same room, sharing the same kinds of emotions, fears, frustrations, joys and accomplishments that everyone living with aphasia and CCD understands, and shares. The SKYPE call highlighted the universality of Aphasia, and made all the group members feel far less alone. The format for the call was to discuss a number of previously devised questions around living with Aphasia and CCD. The SKYPE call ended off with our group joining in on a song sung by the Aphasia Cali choir – the Aphasia Tones. It was a very unique and memorable experience for us all, with many spontaneous and warm comments by members of both University groups, as well as the audience.

Altogether, a very special evening, highlighting the resilience of our group members, and most importantly, how life continues, in spite of the difficulties and challenges.
