Course Contents
This is a one and a half day workshop that will show attendees how to follow a "low-tech" approach in the assessment and rehabilitation of patients with dizziness and imbalance. This is relevant in the South African context, where many hospitals, clinics and other settings do not have "high-tech" equipment such as ENG/VNG, rotary chair or posturography, yet the professional is expected to assess and manage the dizzy patient. The focus of the first day will be on bedside assessments and the interpretation of the findings, as well as when and why to refer the patient for laboratory testing. There will be an overview of the anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system, and a discussion on the signs of common vestibular disorders. There will also be a talk on ethics surrounding the dizzy patient. The focus of the second day will be on vestibular and balance rehabilitation therapy for BPPV, unilateral and bilateral vestibular hypo-function and assessment of risk of falls. There will also be a talk on children with vestibular disorders. Some children are labelled as being clumsy or slow in reaching their motor milestones, where in reality a vestibular problem could be the cause of this.
