ASSADPAM Conference Fosters Collaboration on Governance Challenges

Posted on March 28, 2024

Pretoria recently buzzed with activity as the ASSADPAM Conference, hosted by the School of Public Management and Administration, brought together industry leaders, academics, and enthusiasts from across the globe. The two-day event focused on the timely theme of "Governance in action: Policy, politics, and public administration in flux."
Professor Jarmo Vakkuri of Tampere University, Finland, set the stage with a keynote address titled "Governing hybridity in policy, politics, and public administration."  He challenged attendees to consider the concept of "hybridity" - the blending of different approaches - and its impact on governance, institutions, and policies.  Professor Vakkuri's thought-provoking question, "What kind of hybridity do we need?" urged participants to critically evaluate different forms of hybridity and their potential effects.
Interactive panel discussions were a highlight, featuring leading figures debating AI-related challenges in the public sector. These sessions provided valuable insights and fostered a sense of community around harnessing the positive aspects of AI.
Beyond the formal sessions, attendees built connections and explored collaboration opportunities during networking sessions. Social events offered moments of respite and strengthened professional bonds. A memorandum of understanding was also signed between ASSADPAM and the Public Service Commission aimed to strengthen the oversight and monitoring mandate of the public organisation.
The ASSADPAM conference proved to be a valuable platform for learning, networking, and inspiring positive change. Participants left equipped with tools and knowledge to drive success in their fields. The conference concluded with a renewed sense of purpose, as attendees departed committed to leveraging their learnings for the benefit of their organisations and communities.
