In a captivating exploration of the world of diplomacy, select students from the School of Public Management and Administration (SPMA) recently participated in the World of Work Experience at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation’s (DIRCO) headquarters. Orchestrated by BAdmin@tuks, a sub-house representing the interests of Public Administration students under the leadership of chairperson Karabo Mojela, in collaboration with DIRCO officials, including Mr A. Geldenhuys, the DIRCO deputy director of human resource development and career management, this event unfolded with remarkable intricacy.

Upon entering the grandeur of DIRCO headquarters, students were immediately struck by the architectural marvel that surrounded them. The constant flow of diplomats and civil servants added to the dynamic atmosphere, setting the stage for a day filled with insights and inspiration.

The event commenced with an engaging opening statement by Mr Geldenhuys, whose vibrant expression and confidence left a lasting impression. His advice and encouragement regarding career prospects resonated with the students throughout the day. Subsequently, Mr NE Shongwe, the Director of Human Resources Development and Career Management, delivered a welcome note, delving deeper into career management and introducing key figures such as Mr D Moodley, Deputy Director of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), and Mr H Short, DIRCO's Director of the South African mission to the African Union (AU).

Career diplomats Mr Moodley and Mr Short provided a captivating lecture on the Application of the African Agenda in South Africa's foreign policy. The interactive session included personal anecdotes and a vibrant Q&A segment, captivating the students to the point where they willingly sacrificed their scheduled break.

Mr MS Teka, the director of foreign service and personnel administration, offered insights into the duties of the corporate services manager, captivating the aspiring diplomats. A subsequent Q&A session allowed students to delve deeper into the intricacies of diplomatic service.

Following a brief address on public diplomacy by Ms M Monaisa, the Director of Iternal Communication and Social Media, students enjoyed a lunch break provided by the Department. The afternoon session comprised group exercises moderated by DIRCO officials, including Mr D Du Buisson and Ms NM Rapetswa, focusing on global forecasting and consular services, respectively.  The event concluded at 16:00, leaving students with a wealth of knowledge and experiences.

BAdmin@Tuks’ chairperson Karabo Mojela praised the cooperative efforts between DIRCO and the student sub-house, emphasising the fruitful partnership that has developed. Reflecting on the experience, Mojela concluded that the collaboration was "meant to be."
