SPMA /BAdmin@tuks sanitary pad drive

Posted on April 03, 2023

Life in South Africa is not easy for those who are underprivileged. The rise in inflation has added salt to an open wound, in a country said to be one of the most economically unequal countries in the world. Consequently, young girls cannot afford one of the most non-negotiable items when it’s "that time of the month" - sanitary pads. According to Mamntaney (2021), an estimated 30% of South African girls do not attend school while they are on their periods because they do not have sanitary pads. Therefore, to play their part in remedying this injustice,  the staff at the School of Public Management and Administration (SPMA) decided last year to reallocate the budget usually spent on staff lunches to this worthy cause.  Having raised R8000 the School's student society, BAdmin@tuks, delivered 12 boxes of sanitary pads to J Kekana  and Jafta Mhlangu secondary schools in Mamelodi on 15 March 2023. An additional 7 boxes were donated to UP's community engagement unit to distribute to needy UP students.  A total of 9856 pads were delivered. The SPMA would like to thank the BAdmin@tuks student society for their exemplary demonstration of the servant leadership our country needs from its young leaders. Additional thanks go to the SPMA staff and UP’s  community engagement office  for  their assistance  and support in this initiative. Together we can support keeping our girls in school!
