SPMA student discusses anti-corruption reforms in Botswana at COPPR 2023

Posted on February 21, 2023

Marumo Omotoye, a second year PhD Public Policy candidate in the School of Public Management and Administration, participated in a roundtable discussion hosted by the University of Colorado Denver’s School of Public Affairs, USA, on the ‘Student Experience Applying the Advocacy Coalition Framework (ACF)’, which was led by Professors Kristin Olofsson (Oklahoma State University) and Paul Cairney (University of Stirling, UK).

The aim of the COPPR is to advance the broad scholarship of policy process theory and methods. The roundtable gave participants an opportunity to present and discuss their research experiences in applying the ACF.

Omotoye presented a concept note titled “Evaluating the Role of Policy Networks in the Formulation of Anti-Corruption Reforms in Botswana: A Case Study of the Declaration of Assets and Liabilities Act”.

The purpose of this research is to examine the role that policy networks or advocacy coalitions play in contributing to the development of Botswana’s anti-corruption reforms. Although interagency collaboration is important in the fight against corruption, it remains a key challenge in Botswana’s anti-corruption landscape, as state and non-state actors fail to coordinate their anti-corruption efforts. The deliberations of the roundtable were useful in aligning the study’s research questions to the theoretical underpinnings of the ACF, as well as identifying possible implications of the research to Botswana’s anti-corruption policy framework.
