The School of Public Management and Administration (SPMA) hosted the annual Kehl University of Applied Sciences (Germany) study tour between 25 and 26 February 2020. Fifteen undergraduate students were accompanied by Prof Dr Gert Fieguth, the Dean of Studies. In addition, Prof Dr Joerg Duerrschmidt, of the University of Applied Administrative Sciences who is a specialist on migration and refugee issues, was also part of the group.

The purpose of the annual study tour is to make the students acquaint themselves with South African public sector issues and policies. On 25 February, the students presented on on a wide range of topics in the SPMA’s Leadership Centre. The presentation generated very interesting discussions that also involved staff and students from the SPMA. The topics discussed included access to higher education, human settlements, gender, race, refugees and migration. On 26 February, the delegation visited the Gauteng Department of Social Development’s migration subunit. The head of the subunit, Robinson Sathekge, provided an overview of the migration challenges for the city of Johannesburg.

The SPMA has been hosting a delegation from Kehl University annually since 1997. In return, the SPMA sends staff to Kehl University to deliver lectures and to take part in collaborative research, as well as the annual European Parliament simulations.
