SPMA academic presents to Mandela Washington Fellowship delegation

Posted on June 25, 2019

Dr Onkgopotse Madumo, a senior lecturer in the School of Public Management and Administration (SPMA), presented at the 2019 Mandela Washington Fellowship Regional Convening held at the Southern Sun O.R. Tambo International Airport Hotel on 18 June.

Dr Madumo was invited by the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX), together with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), as a subject expert to share public policy perspectives with the Mandela Washington fellows. The SPMA has a longstanding collaboration with the Southern Africa Regional Leadership Centre of the Young African Leaders Initiative, where the School is responsible for facilitating the Public Management Track of the programme.

His presentation was titled “Evidence-based approach to formulating and influencing youth unemployment policy” and was shared with the youth delegation that is affiliated to the Mandela Washington Fellowship of the Young African Leadership Initiative. He explains that the main message of his talk was that public policies are not a responsibility of the government alone. “Civil society movements, entrepreneurs and non-governmental organisations that are driven by the youth, have a much bigger role to play in shaping these policies.”

The delegates at the convening came from the entire Sub-Saharan region. The delegates appreciated the toolkit that Dr Madumo shared with them on policy making and implementation.
