Congratulations to both Profs Chirwa and Daramola for being two of the nine finalists from UP nominated for THE 24th NSTF-SOUTH32 AWARDS 2021/2022.

Posted on June 03, 2022

The NSTF-South32 Awards is the flagship project of the NSTF, initiated in 1998, as the first national science award of its kind in the country. The Awards not only bring important national recognition to the deserving established scientists, research managers, data stewards, engineers, technologists, innovators, educationalists/trainers, as well as professional communicators, but also highlight evidence-based solutions for the socio-economic change required to improve the country and the everyday life of its citizens.

The University of Pretoria certainly proved its contribution to this change. It is a unique opportunity for the University of Pretoria to have nine of its academic staff nominated as finalists in their respective NSTF award categories. To be nominated is an honour, to make the finals is an outstanding achievement and to win an award is an exceptional achievement and celebration of excellence. The Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology (EBIT) is proud that two of its staff members from the Department of Chemical Engineering will be hosted at this year’s award ceremony.

Prof Michael O. Daramola – Professor and Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, is nominated as a finalist in the categories; Engineering Research Capacity Development and in the TW Kambule-NSTF Researcher.

Prof Evans M N Chirwa – Professor in the Department and Rand Water Research Chair: Water Utilisation, is nominated for two categories in Engineering Research Capacity Development Award and NSTF-Water Research Commission (WRC) Award.

The broadcast of this hybrid event will happen via the NSTF YouTube channel on Thursday, 21 July 2022 at 16:30.

Upon receiving the exciting news, this is what Professor Chirwa said:

“I received the above news with lots of joy and gratitude. At moments like this, I find myself at a loss for words. I thank my Faculty for nominating me and the NSTF organisers for the consideration for the award. My postgraduate students who are the true finalists given the effort they put into their work are extremely overjoyed. I am looking forward to the Gala event on 21 July.”

Upon receiving the exciting news, this is what Prof Daramola said:

"I was humbled by the announcement. It is indeed an honour to be nominated for this award by the NSTF, a prestigious organisation that recognises excellence as its primary criterion for these awards. Truly speaking, it is evident that hard work pays off, whatever you do. I thank God Almighty for the strength and the gift of life to me, because I believe I can do all things through HIM. Also, I thank my students, my colleagues, my family, and the University of Pretoria for their support, encouragement, and dedication- I AM BECAUSE YOU ARE”.

Prof Eloff, the Acting Dean of EBIT congratulated Profs Chirwa and Daramola and wishes them all of the best with their future endeavors.
