#TuksRugby: UP-Tuks versus UCT Ikeys - a humdinger FNB Varsity Cup final

Posted on May 31, 2021

"The job is not finished yet. We need to bring the trophy "home".

This is the attitude Tuks will take to the field when playing Ikeys on Monday, 31 May in the 2021 FNB Varsity Cup final.

"We are under no illusions. Ikeys wants it as much as we do. So it is going to be 80 minutes of merciless rugby," predicts Jaco Bezuidenhout, Tuk vice-captain.

Tuks has won the Varsity Cup on three occasions (2012, 2013 and 2017) while Ikeys were the 2011 champions beating Tuks in the final. Ikeys also triumphed in 2014.

Asked about Tuks's strategy for their sixth Varsity Cup final, Bezuidenhout said the simplified version is that they are again going to try and play a territorial game.

"Ikeys might possibly try and do the same. So the final could be a battle of the 'up and unders'. Zander du Plessis and David Coetzer executed it to perfection against Maties.

"For us forwards, the challenge will be to dominate. If we execute the basics to perfection and limit our mistakes, the battle will be half won.

"The thing is that when Ikeys got the ball, they are always dangerous. Their backline players have fine-tuned the art of finding gaps in any defence. But then again, our defensive play had been brilliant throughout the tournament."

Tuks fullback, Zander du Plessis, set a new Varsity Cup tournament record on Friday when he scored 17 points against Maties. It brought his points tally to 145, which is the most by a player in a season.

According to du Plessis, it is an honour to have the record to his name.

"But that is not what Varsity Cup rugby is about. As a player, it is about what I can do to help the team win. Every point I scored was due to my teammates putting their bodies on the line creating opportunities."

The kick-off of the 2021 FNB Varsity Cup final at 7 pm.
