#TuksRugby: TuksWomensRugby7's to defend “zero” during München Oktoberfest Tournament

Posted on September 19, 2019

The Delta Drone TuksWomensRugby7's will be out to retain their 100% defensive record for a third consecutive time on Saturday when they compete in the München Oktoberfest Tournament.

The team has been the champions for the last two years. That, however, is not the whole story. Statistically, they achieved the near-impossible by not conceding a single point in ten consecutive games.

During last year's tournament, Tuks scored 270 points in five games stopping any opposition player from crossing their try line. In 2017 the overall tally after five games was Tuks 285, Opposition 0.

Riaan van der Merwe (Tuks head coach) admits that odds are stacked against them trying to defend "zero" for the third time. Especially since Germany's national women's team is competing for the first time.

Earlier this season during the Stanislas Tournament in France the Germans hammered Tuks winning 27-0.

Libbie Janse van Rensburg (Tuks's captain) is however of the opinion that what happened in France stays in France.

"I don't really want to think back to that game. We were not playing good rugby at the time. That is why Germany won. This time our preparation has been going well. Every player has, without a doubt more confidence in their playing abilities.

"I actually won't mind if we get to play Germany in the final. There will be a lot of pressure on them to win in front of their home crowd. It can play out to our advantage."

Tuks has definitely got one of the better backlines in women's sevens rugby. At 'flyhalf' Van Rensburg is a real playmaker who can change the outcome of any game in a mere moment. If she is not the one "slicing" through a gap in the opposition's defence, she will send her wingers away to score. To add to this, she is also deadly accurate when converting tries.

Having Van Rensburg playing is like having 14 points on the scoreboard on any given day.

Unfortunately, it seems as if it might be one of the last times that the two Tuks's wingers Megan Phillips and Liske Lategan will be playing in the "Striped Jersey".

Their speedy onfield heroics have not gone unnoticed. There is a real chance that they will get the opportunity in the next few weeks to try and help the Springbok Women's Seven Side to qualify for next year's Olympic Games in Tokyo.  Both of them already had callup to train with the national squad.

If selected, it will mean that there will be three Tuks players in the Springbok backline. Nadine Roos who scored 11 tries last year for Tuks in Munchen and received the player of the tournament award has already established herself as a regular in the national team.
