#TuksRugby: Championship hat-trick for senior teams

Posted on September 09, 2019

TuksRugby’s senior teams made it three from three on Saturday, 7 September when they all won their respective 2019 Volcano Super League finals.

The day started on a high note with Tuks getting the better of Quins-Bobbies in the third league final. It was by far Tuks’ best performance of the season and one that made them deserved champions with their 31-17 win.

In the second final of the day Tuks-Fezelas initially battled against Naka Bulle in the second league final, but in the end ran in a convincing 39-27 win.

All eyes, however, was on the main match where UP-Tuks did battle with their Naka Bulle counterparts.
In what can only be described as a text book performance of clinical rugby UP-Tuks used the first 40 minutes to stake their claim like the champions they are. The teams changed sides with UP-Tuks in front with 27-0, a lead that proved to be decisive.

Naka Bulle staged a spirited fight back by scoring the first two tries of the second half, but UP-Tuks never gave them a real fighting chance by striking back with points almost immediately after Naka has scored.
It was only fitting that UP-Tuks scored the last points of the game, claiming a half century with fly half Steven Moir’s last penalty goal for his team to win 50-26. He dictated the course of the match with his reliable kicking boot and was deservedly named to be Man of the Match. Moir made a personal contribution of 25 points with five goals and five penalties.

For UP-Tuks 1 Head Coach Nico Luus the win heralded another fine achievement as it was the second season in a row that his team finished with an unbeaten record in the Volcano Super League.

Under him as head coach, UP-Tuks has not suffered a single defeat in either the Volcano Super League or Carlton Cup Competition. In two seasons they won 31 of their 32 matches with the recent draw against Centurion the only slip.

Just as proud and grateful as Luus was at the resounding victory and accompanying winning percentage of 97, he was just as happy to share these successes with everyone who contributed: from high-ranking individuals such as Prof Susan Adendorff and Theuns Reynolds, respectively president and chairman of TuksRugby, to every player and member of the management team.
