#TuksWomensRugby7's captain impresses New Zealanders with her try scoring abilities

Posted on February 11, 2019

Different jersey, a different country not that it really mattered as the Delta Drone UP-TuksWomensRugby7's captain, Libbie Janse van Rensburg, just continued doing what she does best and that is to score tries.

Janse van Rensburg is currently training in New Zealand at the Inside Rugby Academy in Mt Maunganui. Over the weekend she got to compete in a Tens Tournament.

The Tuks captain gave an impressive display of running rugby scoring no less than 11 of her team’s 20 tries during the tournament. Her fleet footedness has not gone unnoticed. Afterwards, she received the award as the best player from the club’s primary sponsor.

Janse van Rensburg gets quite excited when talking about how her perspective of rugby has changed since she has been in New Zealand.

“It is not as if they are doing things that differently in New Zealand. However, their game tactics do differ from what we are doing at Tuks which means I am forced to change the way I think about the game and go about doing things. That is exciting. I also got a new perspective on how to get fitter and stronger.

“Last week I had the opportunity to watch how players from New Zealand’s Women’s Rugby Academy go about doing their lineout drills. I took a video and spoke to the players. It is these new ideas which I want to bring back to Tuks.

“One thing that will be great is if we also can get a rugby academy for women going in South Africa. The focus should be to help players understand the finer intricacies of the game in three months so that they are able to play competitively. It is so important to find ways to increase our player pool.”

**Riaan van der Merwe (Delta Drone UP-TuksWomensRugby7 head coach) has announced the dates when France’s University of Bordeaux’s men’s and women’s seven teams will be competing at Tuks.

There will be two tournaments (23 February and 2 March). The March Tournament is possibly going to be one of the most significant events on the women’s sevens calendar as 13 teams are playing. It includes teams from Botswana as well as the Springbok Women’s Seven-side.

On 25 February the TuksWomenRugby 7’s side will play the chief curtain raiser before UP-Tuks takes on Wits in the Varsity Cup Tournament.
