#TuksRugby: UP-Tuks women’s sevens win Munchen Oktoberfest Tournament a second time

Posted on October 07, 2018

If anyone would have bet on the Delta Drone TuksWomensRugby7's team to concede a try during the Munchen Oktoberfest Tournament, they were bound to have gone thirsty yesterday.

Not only did the team win the tournament for the second consecutive year they again did not concede a single point. From a statistics perspective, the odds of doing so is highly unlikely. The UP-Tuks scored 270 points in five games. During last year’s tournament, they scored 285 points.

Yesterday in the final UP-Tuks outplayed the Tabisuro Angels to win 40-0.

The Springbok, Nadine Roos, impressed by scoring 11 tries during the tournament and succeeding with 75% of the conversions. It led to her getting the Player of the Tournament award.

According to Riaan van der Merwe (coach), Meghan Phillips was also brilliant with ball in hand. In one game she scored four tries.

It has sort of became the norm for Kemi Baloyi to do the “hard women’s work” for the team. She did not disappoint. In all five games, she was in the thick of things. Putting her body on the line going for the big tackles on countless occasions. She also mastered the art of making turnovers.

The UP-Tuks team is undoubtedly one of the best club teams in the world. Of the six international tournaments they contested so far this year they won two, was twice runners-up and once finished third.

What is remarkable is that UP-Tuks are able to beat national teams like Wales who is considered to be one of the top women’s seven sides.

Their last tournament will be in November when they are competing in Dubai. There is a real chance that UP-Tuks could face-off against the Springbok women’s side. If it happens it could be a humdinger as at stake will be the bragging rights as to who is South Africa’s best.
