Congratulations on an unprecedented average percentage of 100 in both the Carton Cup Competition and Inter-Provincial Super League.
This is how the 2018 progress report of UP-Tuks 1 reads after the team of Theuns Reynolds claimed its second championship title on Saturday, 18 August with a 29-9 win against Naka Bulle in the Super League final played at Loftus Versfeld B.
On 28 July UP-Tuks beat the same opponents 49-32 in the Carlton Cup final.
UP-Tuks' 29-9 win against Naka was their 16th consecutive one of the season, which ensured that the flagship of the University of Pretoria finished unbeaten in the local league for the first time since 2008.
The 2018 Super League finals had few moments of pure brilliance, but was rather a hard-thought battle between two equally determined rivals who did not want to take chances. This explains why the match only yielded two tries and the scoreboard kept alive by the 10 successful kicks at goal.
In the first half, the result was still very much in the balance because UP-Tuks found themselves in untested waters at half-time when they trailed 6-9. However, in the last 40 minutes, UP Tuks showed why they set the pace from start to finish this season. What made the significant difference between winning and losing was the extent to which UP-Tuks outclassed their opponents in terms of clinical finishing, dominance of the set pieces, rock solid defence and flawless goal kicking.
One would have thought that UP-Tuks fly half, Steven Moir had his day against Naka in the Carlton Cup final when he contributed 26 points with his golden boot. In the Super League final is was again Moir who excelled as goal kicker with a 100% success rate. He added 19 points with two conversions, four penalty goals and a second half drop goal.
Nico Luus, head coach of UP Tuks, was very emotional after his team's win in the Super League Final.
"I'm struggling to get words that will do justice to what this exceptional group of players has achieved this season. I speak on behalf of the entire management team if I say it was a great honour and privilege to work with these players and see how their self-confidence, skills, momentum, rhythm and insatiable desire to make winning a habit culminated in the dynamics and synergy of a true champion team. Today was tough, as we expected, and our victory has once again emphasized the rugby truth that you should use your chances if you want to win finals. All the hard work, sacrifice and vasbyt was definitely worth it. "
Stefan Coetzee and Bart le Roux scored UP-Tuks' tries.
