Tuks students who love the challenge of sidestepping opposition players with the ball in hand and above all are fitness fanatics should take up rugby league football.
Fanie Bredenhann who coaches rugby league football at Tuks describes it as one of the most demanding ball sports there are. Therefore he encourages students who love a genuine challenge to consider taking up rugby league football. He guarantees that they won’t be disappointed.
“Unlike rugby, there are no stoppages for line-outs or mauls and the scrums are not contested which means the ball is in play for the full 80 minutes of the game. The game boils down to constant attacks and tackle after tackle. Most rugby players who tried rugby league admitted at first to die within the first 30 minutes of play because of the continuance of play.”
In rugby league size also does not really matter. Bredenhann compared the ideal size of a league player to that of a Springbok centre.
“If I can have 13 Springbok centres on my team I would be thrilled."
Over the last decade, the Tuks Rugby League Football team has dominated the Gauteng League raking in the titles. According to Bredenhann Tuks is currently the top club team in the country.
The club league, as well as the provincial league, officially starts from September. In October an Australian national student team will tour South Africa.
The Tuks team trains on Tuesdays and Thursday from 18:00 at the Groenkloof sports grounds. For more information contact Bredenhann at 083 677 2111 or
