#TuksRugby: Tuks women still on track in Centrale Sevens Tournament in Paris

Posted on May 11, 2017

The TuksWomensRugby 7s Team is still on track to a possible quarterfinal playoff in the Centrale Sevens Tournament in Paris after beating the Cambridge University 34-0 last night.

In their first game, they lost 7-12 to Portugal’s national sevens team. Today they play against Belgium’s national team as well as the team of Ukraine. Tuks needs to win at least one of these two games. It is going to be tough as Belgium is ranked as the 21st best women’s sevens side in the world while Ukraine is one of the top five ranked teams in Europe.

Riaan van der Merwe (coach) was slightly disappointed after the loss against Portugal.
“We played at speed but the players tended to pass too late, but I am confident we will sort this out as the tournament progress. The problem we have is that we don’t get to play against enough good teams in South Africa. So playing in Paris is quite a big step up for us.”

Portugal was 12-0 up when Kemi Baloyi, a honours student in sports science, scored a try for Tuks. Libbie Janse van Rensburg converted.

The try scorers against Cambridge were Nadine Roos (3) and Van Rensburg (2) and Lloli Nhlaba. Van Rensburg succeeded with two conversions.

The kickoff time for today’s game against Belgium is 12:40 and against Ukraine it is 17:20. The games are live streamed on http://centrale7.fr/
