Team manager Dries Schoombee summarised Fezela’s performance as one of too many spilled opportunities.
“It was not a case of having too few opportunities, but rather one of not using them properly. We, for instance, missed every kick at goal. My man of the match would have been No 8 Daniel Nichol,” added Schoombee.
Nichol and Danie Oosthuizen scored Fezelas’ tries.
Tuks’ other teams had mixed results. The o.19B (34-23), o.20A (34-20) and Pumas (bt Njati’s 20-17) won their matches. Most worrying was the beatings of the u.19A (59-5) and u.21A team (29-18). The u.21B's also lost (17-12).
Tuks did have the last last laugh in the battle of the hostels, winning three of the five matches.
Most notable, however, was Maroela’s loss in the Varsity Cup series. They were beaten 30-15 by Dromedaris and now faces the real possibility of not qualifying for the play-offs.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but the decision to promote two of Maroela’s star players, centre Henk de Ridder and flanker Hj Swanepoel, to the Fezelas line-up can still be questioned. Was this in the best interest of TuksRugby?
Kollege was relentless in their match, beating Kanniedood 80-0. Onderstepoort also had a field day, overrunning Oppierif 55-5. Mopanie beat Vorendag 29-3, but Sonop, who lost to Maroela in the Tuks knock-out league final, came short against Bastion (8-0).
