Gifted as he may be, Shaun is just too inconsistent to any longer take charge of the goal kicking duties, agreed Freddie.
A lot of work went into improving his aim, but on Friday, 17 July it was evident that Shaun is not cut out to become a place kicker of name. Tuks scored five tries in their 27-7 win against Silver Valke, but Shaun only succeeded with one conversion.
He also struggled in this role when Tuks beat TUT 23-9.
“It is only fair to Shaun and the team to entrust someone else with the kicking duties. Our success ratio of 35% in our last three second round matches is just not acceptable. In the play-offs one missed penalty can make the difference between advancing to the final or not,” said Freddie.
Since Shaun is such a key player it’s just not worth it to persist with him as goal kicker.
“Relieving him of this duty will give him the change to fully concentrate on his own game. We need him to be as battle sharp as possible for the semi-finals,” added Freddie.
Freddie thinks "it’s for the best that I do not speculate on likely candidates as this may raise unrealistic expectations. There is also the strong likelihood that the current back line will have to change to accommodate the new kicker. This will mean that at least one player will forfeit his spot in the starting line-up.”
Even if Freddie is not prepared to spill the beans, one can think of only two candidates who fit the bill. The likely choice would be fly half Stanley Twiname, who has already scored 100 Carlton Cup points – 90 with the boot.
The major stumbling between Stanley and his inclusion is that he will have to be accommodated in a position other than fly half. The new kicker looks set to play fullback. Freddie and Co may therefore rather give prefrence to a specialist fullback who is also a reliable kicker.
And they will have to look little further than Justin van Staden, who showed his mettle as recent as the USSA Tournament in Johannesburg when he scored 21 of Tuks’ 24 points in the match against Maties.
Say Justin gets the nod to play in the No 15 jersey in the semi-final, what to do with Fanie Booysen then? Fanie is one of the regular stars in the Tuks backline and the top try scorer in the Carlton League (16). He has to stay in the starting XV and his re-deployment may well be on right wing.
Fanie is not only a prolific try scorer, but also has a very long foot with which he can relieve pressure and even attack.
Tuks will announce their 22 for the semi-final no sooner than Monday, 27 July.
