The dream to become the first Tuks team in 25 years to win the sought after Carlton Cup three years in a row came to nothing as Police snatched victory in the second last minute of extra time. Police won 31-28.
“It is never good to lose a final, but what makes it even worse is the fact that we could have won comfortably. In the end it was not to be, however, as we simply made too many critical mistakes,” said Freddie.
“All their tries came through our lack of concentration, decision making and finishing. And it all happened because we did not have enough experience to stay level headed when it was needed most.”
Freddie added that Police used their experience to great use.
“Where we panicked and did not stick to the game plan, they remained calm, composed and made the most of our mistakes. For that, they deserve all the credit they deserve,” said Freddie.
“It is very sad that Tuks will not take part in the 2009 National Club Championships as we are hosting it at the LC de Villiers Sports Grounds (in September),” Freddie said.
“It was not the way we wanted to end the season, but the biggest challenge now is to learn from out mistakes so that all the players can start our 2010 Varsity Cup preparations later this year wiser, stronger and mentally tougher. All things considered, our young team showed a lot of promise and undoubtedly has the potential to become great outfit.”
• Justin van Staden, Tuks’ fullback, contributed 18 points with a try, two conversions, a penalty goal and two drop goals. Juan Palm and Quinten Skewes scored the other points with tries.
