“In our group we have to face the onslaught of three countries (France, the USA and Thailand) as well as the team selected from players in the Moscow Metropolis, for all practical purposes the Russian national team in disguise. What makes our participation even more special is that we out bade four countries for the final spot in our group. The organisers’ decision is a wonderful tribute to the dedication of our players,” added Riaan.

Tuks will play four games on the opening day (Friday, 4 December).

“We start against the French, to whom we have lost four times this season, on every occasion by a single try. The last time they beat us was in the finals of the international tournament in Reunion,” said Riaan.

Tuks’ other opponents on day one are Moscow Regional, the United States and Thailand.

“What adds to the excitement is the fact that we will play three or our first four matches on the main field, the same pitch on which Paul Treu and his Springok sevens side will show their mettle,” remarked Riaan.

To qualify for the championships quarter-finals Tuks will have to win at least two of their four group matches.

“We will be without on of our big stalwarts, Yolanda Meiring, who has to stay home due to an injury. All the other players are however as geared up as can be to let the Tuks and SA flag fly high,” said Riaan.

Riaan has little doubt that Tuks could not have prepared better for the Dubai tournament.

At the recent international tournament in Grootvlei, the Blue Bulls, with 10 Tuks players in their midst, outplayed Zimbabwe in the finals (32-0). Prior to the Grootvlei tournament, Tuks beat Botswana in the final of the international tournament played in Middelburg.

According to Riaan, Australia will be the ladies to watch in the other group as the team from Down Under IS the defending world champions. Kenya should be the other team that should qualify for the championship quarter-finals.

Tuks’ team:

Annelize Moore, Lala Vazi, Ilse van Staden, Cyndy Cant, Veronica Malanztswane,
Onica Moaga, Pulane Motloing (k), Marlien Cronjé, Mapule Moremi, Kerry Townley, Mariska Loots, Jennifer Modiba.
