To new Head Coach Riaan Vorster this performance could not have come at a better time as his charges lacked form in their first two Carlton League matches of the 2013 competition.
UP-Tuks opened the season with an uninspiring 41-24 win against Eastern Eagles and then went from bad to worse six days later when they shared the spoils with Centurion (26-26).
On Friday UP-Tuks looked the better side from start to finish, already scoring their fourth try for the bonus point in the 21st minute. At the break the home side had an almost unassailable 54-5 lead.
Vorster was very modest in his reaction to UP-Tuks’ first century of the season: “We really needed such a confidence booster, but will not make the mistake of reading too much into the score line. We played much better than in any of the first two matches with a notable improvement in our game plan execution. Even so, it was not a flawless performance by any standards, but for a change the positives outweighed the negatives by a significant margin. Important now is to take the best from the performance against Silver Valke and build on that in our preparation for the match against TUT (on Saturday, 11 May).”
19 year old fly half Thys Albertse contributed 28 points with his 14 conversions, followed by inside centre Dirk Dippenaar (25, 5 tries) and No 8 RB Joubert (15, 3 tries). The other try scorers were Riaan Britz, Vainon Willis, Dirko Smuts, Frederik Eksteen, Cloete Wessels, Nqubeko Zulu, Jono Janse van Rensburg and Ivan Venter.
♦ In a second league fixture Tuks Fezelas beat their Silver Valke counterparts 90-3. Tuks Pumas (3rd league) and Tuks Jongspan (u.21’s) won by default as Silver Valke could not field sides for these fixtures.
