It was not only his meticulous goal kicking that devastated the Eagles. He was also on song with his tactical play, driving the Eagles back with his long range torpedo kicks time after time.
Connoisseurs of the game was united in their opinion that this was one of the most clinical match winning performances they have witnessed in a very long time by a fly half at club level.
Modest as he is, Du Plessis contributed his five star performance to the support of his team mates “who, after all, made it possible for me to make a meaningful contribution. I owe it all to the team.”
And he was right, because giving Du Plessis all the credit would have been an injustice to the other players who all rose to the occasion, showing the class that distinguishes UP-Tuks 1 from the rest.
It was not all smooth sailing initially as the Eagles stood their ground firmly, but as UP-Tuks were dominating the set pieces they were able to take the initiative and changed sides with a comfortable lead of 22-6.
UP-Tuks never took their foot off the pedal and scored their fourth and last try in the 81st minute.
Head Coach Riaan Vorster hailed his charges for a very matured and composed performance.
“I have always believed in the potential of the team and today they justified it with a very solid performance of winning rugby. The players did themselves and the University proud. As a coach I could not have asked for more. I am very satisfied and will sleep soundly tonight,” said Vorster.
UP-Tuks’ tries were scored by Riaan Britz, Vainon Willis, Willie du Plessis and Andries Kruger. Du Plessis also succeeded with all four conversions, three penalties and a drop goal.
