Covid-19 Surveillance

The COVID-19 pandemic which began in March 2020 flooded health facilities globally with an overwhelming number of patients needing hospital admission. This led to an overburdened public health system necessitating re-evaluation its efficiency, in particular patient health information systems. In an effort to improve in-hospital patient data capturing and reporting for surveillance, an electronic based reporting system DATCOV was developed in SA by the NICD, launched for use in hospitals country from October 2020.

DATCOV is an electronic in hospital patient database that consolidates records of admissions, in hospital patient management, and separation of covid-19 patients. It monitors trends in COVID-19 hospitalised patients. It provides both clinical and programmatic information which is used by health facilities in their daily bed management, and resource allocation. Data assists in decision making and advocating for policy or COVID-19 protocol changes. The department provides the hospital with COVID-19 data surveillance monitoring and reporting, including DATCOV and bed management.

Covid-19 Vaccine Project

The Department has invested significant resources on the COVID-19 Vaccine project. Based on its experiences of participating in Sisonke 1 trial in the SBAH, we have worked with the UP team under the leadership of Ms K du Preez to establish the first University based vaccination site in South Africa, which has been operating consistently over one year on three days a week (Tue-Thu). The site was subsequently registered for Sisonke 2 trial for COVID-19 vaccine booster doses.
Subsequently, the UP COPC research Unit received a grant from GIZ to establish a COVID-19 Vaccine Roll-out Process Verification and Optimization Project in South Africa. The UP Department of Industrial Engineering assisted to map the process flow at various types of vaccination sites as a part of the Project. Later on at the request of the National Department of Health, the project changed its focus to vaccination of undocumented migrants, homeless and hard-reach communities in the three Gauteng metro districts (namely Tshwane, Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg). The five departmental staff members were trained in the Mezanine system® which allows registration of undocumented migrants.

As a part of the Project, two site offices were established at the TPTH in Ekurhuleni and Hillbrow Community Health Centre in Johannesburg. The Departmental staff members attend the weekly District Vaccination committee meetings at these districts and provide feedback on its activities.

Accident and Emergency Dashboard Project

The A&E Dashboard Project is a quality improvement project situated within Steve Biko Academic Hospital (SBAH). The aim of the project is to track and trace patients in accident and emergency who are awaiting admission to wards, those awaiting investigations or review by medical teams and patient long stays who have been in the A&E for more than two days. The dashboard which is updated at 12:00 every day is used by clinical managers to unblock congestion within the A&E allowing patients to access quality care at SBAH.
