Department of Psychology showcases research at the 26th Annual PsySSA Congress

The Psychological Society of South Africa (PsySSA) held its 26th annual congress and scientific conference from 12th to the 14th of October 2022, at Emperor’s Palace, in Johannesburg. Staff members and students from the Department of Psychology presented a number of scientific papers and participated in roundtables as well as symposia. Collectively, the presented work showcased a diverse range of research being done within the Department across of the fields of applied positive psychology and well-being studies, counselling psychology and public mental health, community psychology and professional training, assessment psychology and methodology, as well as the psychology of gender and sexuality.
 
Professor Tharina Guse and Professor David Maree delivered the paper, Well-being during Covid-19: The role of hope, perceived stress and vaccine hesitancy. In addition to this, Professor David Maree presented the paper, Different methods in Psychology but one science? and participated in the roundtable, Assessment classification and review processes for South Africa: A best practice approachDr Jarred Martin delivered the paper, Fist-fucking: A countersexual intimacy, and participated in the symposium, Sexual Consent: A moment or a movement? Dr Kamilla Rawatlal, chaired the congress session on Clinical and Counselling Psychology and presented the paper, Integrating a wellness model to primary mental health care services in the African context: Implications for MA Counselling Psychology training.
 
Lastly, the postgraduate students from the Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology degree programme presented a paper based on their Community Psychology project, Promoting psychological well-being of teachers: Learning to take care of themselves. The project was supervised by Professor Maretha Visser.
