On the 4th November 2022, Dr Jarred Martin, from the Department of Psychology, was elected to the Executive Committee of the Sexuality and Gender Division (SGD) of the Psychological Society of South Africa (PsySSA). Dr Martin will serve as a member of the SGD Executive Committee for the next two years. The SGD, while one of the newer divisions of PsySSA, remains one of the most socially active and engaged. As a division of PsySSA, the mission of the SGD is to promote a psychological understanding of the fields of sexuality and gender. The SGD focuses its efforts in the South African context, but also cultivates continental and international networks of mutual interest in the fields of sexuality and gender in Psychology. While the SGD has been at the forefront of developing and promoting practice guidelines for Psychology professionals working with sexually and gender-diverse people, it continues to work at advancing sexual and gender affirming healthcare and mental healthcare in South Africa through ongoing policy development, research, community engagement, and activism. Dr Martin was elected with Chris McLachlan (Chair), Prof Juan Nel (Vice Chair), Suntosh Pillay, Pierre Brouard (also from the University of Pretoria), and Nkanyiso Madlala, who will together form the Executive Committee until 2023.
