Summary CV
Emily joined the Faculty of Veterinary Science in 2017 and is involved in diagnostic pathology service provision, teaching the pathology of the cardiovascular and urinary systems to undergraduates, post-graduate student supervision and research. She has supervised 5 post-graduate students. She collaborates nationally and internationally with wildlife managers, veterinarians and pathologists on diagnosing and researching the epidemiology of wildlife disease. She also collaborates with human health practitioners regarding zoonotic wildlife diseases.
Research Expertise/Interest
Emily’s particular areas of interest are diseases of felids in captivity. One of her particular areas of expertise is diseases of captive cheetahs. She is also interested in the pathology, epidemiology and zoonotic implication of tuberculosis and other infectious diseases in wildlife. he has published widely on wildlife disease and One Health (1 book, 7 book chapters and 60 journal articles).

Dr A Loots completed her PhD at the University of Pretoria in 2018 in the field of “Molecular characterisation and host specificity of canine distemper virus in selected wild carnivores of South Africa”.
MSc
Mr A Oosthuizen completed his MSc at the Tshwane University of Technology in 2017 in the field of “Molecular identification and epidemiology of parvoviruses affection wild fields in South Africa”.
Honours
Mr K Leriba completed his BSc Honours at the Tshwane University of Technology in 2016 in the field of “The genetic variability of interleukin 1 genes associated with amyloidosis in cheetahs”.
