About Us

Apart from the Department’s extensive teaching commitments and research functions it also provides an extensive diagnostic service in pathology. Within the Section of Pathology there is a reference laboratory to which cases are referred for both macroscopic and histopathological evaluation. In addition, the laboratory also renders a diagnostic immunohistochemistry service.

The Department plays a leading role in the support of several government departments in aspects of veterinary disease control, the evaluation for authorisation of veterinary drug registration and other related matters in South Africa.

The Department focuses on the veterinary related aspects of food safety and public health. Veterinary Public Health is regarded as contributing to the complete physical, mental and social well-being of humans through an understanding and application of veterinary science within a multidisciplinary team.
