BSc (Hons) Medical Microbiology
Entry Requirements: According to University guidelines a candidate must hold a Bachelors degree preferably in Microbiology or related fields, deemed acceptable by the Head of Department and Head of Research. Equivalent qualifications may be deemed acceptable by the Senate of the University. An average of at least 60% in all subjects in final year courses is a prerequisite.

The programme 
The course is a one year full-time programme that commences in January and concludes in November. Candidates will be expected to be present in the department on a full-time basis during the year and participate in all departmental activities. The course will be followed as outlined in the Regulations and Syllabi published by the Faculty of Health Sciences each year including all tests and exams. Candidates will also be expected to conduct a practical research project with an independent research report to be submitted in November, of the same year. 

MSc Medical Microbiology  
Entry Requirements: A candidate must hold a four-year bachelors degree or an honours degree in the field of Microbiology with the proviso that the Head of Department and Head of Research will have the discretion to decide whether the prerequisite qualifications would be acceptable for admission.

The programme
The two year MSc degree is conferred by virtue of a dissertation. Candidates will be required to conduct a full-time research project under the supervision of the Head of Research. The candidate will be required to register with the Health Professionals Council of South Africa as a student medical scientist.

PhD Medical Microbiology 
A candidate must hold a MSc degree in Microbiology or a related field. The doctoral examination is based on assessment of the thesis by two external examiners and should be completed within 3-5 years.

Post Doctoral fellowship 
Candidates must hold a PhD degree in Microbiology or related field. The candidate is required to conduct relevant research and assist in training and supervision of students.
