Basic Requirements:
A Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree is required, preferably majoring in Microbiology, Genetics, Virology and/or Biochemistry. An average of 65% and above is a minimum requirement for acceptance to the course.
Programme Outline:
The BSc Hons is a one year full-time programme that comprises coursework: (i) Applied Research Methodology (TNM 700), (ii) Medical Biostatistics (MBS 700) and (iii) Medical Microbiology (GMB 700); the GMB 700 course is further broken down into Basic Microbiology, Molecular Pathology and Advanced Microbiology. Additionally, the BSc Hons programme consists of a research project that will be conducted under an assigned research supervisor and will contribute 50% of your final honours mark.
Basic Requirements:
A Bachelor of Science (4 year programme) or BSc Honours degree is required, preferably in Microbiology, Genetics, Virology and/or Biochemistry subjects with an average of 65% and above. A BSc/BSc Honours degree with a research component will be advantageous.
Programme Outline:
The MSc programme is a two year full time research based programme where a dissertation will be submitted upon completion. The course is in-person as it requires an extensive laboratory component and therefore does not have an online option. Supervisors and projects will be assigned following acceptance to the department. An Applied Research Methodology (TNM 800) course is compulsory and if required you will also have to attend the following subjects in the BSc Hons programme: Basic Microbiology, Molecular Pathology, Advanced Microbiology and Medical Biostatistics.

The MSc degree must be research based and obtained by dissertation. Prospective PhD students should first submit an original draft research protocol/proposal to Prof Marthie Ehlers ([email protected]), on a clinical microbiology research study that is aligned with the research focus of the Department of Medical Microbiology for evaluation, before applying. Please note that the application process will follow only after acceptance of the draft protocol by the relevant supervisor/s.

The PhD programme is a three year full time research course where a thesis will be submitted upon completion. The course is in-person as it requires an extensive laboratory component and therefore does not have an online option. An MBChB/MBBCh degree and registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner (Independent Practice). The recruitment is done by the National Health Laboratory Service and further enquiries on the MMed: Medical Microbiology programme can be directed to the National Health Laboratory Service at enquiries@nhls.ac.za.
Programme Outline:
The MMed programme is a full time research course with a minimum duration of 4 years, where a dissertation (MMS 890) must be submitted. Registrars at the Department of Medical Microbiology are expected to complete an Applied Research Methodology (TNM 802) course and are also required to attend lectures in the following subjects in the BSc Hons programme: Basic Microbiology, Advanced Microbiology and Molecular Pathology. Additionally, registrars rotate at the departments of Immunology and Virology and have an opportunity to attended courses at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, which are optional but highly recommended such as a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTM&H). The registrars have two Colleges of Medicine (CMSA) assessments (Primaries and an Exit exam), in addition to several other assessments done at the department throughout the programme.
Clinical laboratory diagnostic service, consultative clinical service, teaching and participation in the departmental Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme forms an integral component of the MMed Programme. Registrars are expected to participate in ward rounds, communicate regularly with clinicians and participate in on-call duties. Upon successful completion of the degree, which includes the completion of the research component (dissertation) and successful CMSA Microbiology exams, candidates register with the HPCSA as a medical specialist and obtain fellowship with the College of Medicine of South Africa.

Programme Outline:
The National Health Laboratory Service-Tshwane Academic Division (NHLS-TAD) has been accredited by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) for the training of Intern Medical Scientists in SANAS accredited diagnostic laboratories. The Intern Medical Scientist programme is a 2 year full-time position where training and assessments/assignments will be provided on all routine diagnostic medical microbiology laboratory tests and all quality assurance activities. Interns will be expected to conduct a mini research project under the supervision of a principal medical scientist and to attend lectures. A final portfolio of all training and assessment/assignment records, as well as attendance records of lectures, workshops, presentations and tutorials will be submitted to the HPCSA upon the completion of the training programme. Successful candidates will be registered with the HPCSA as Medical Biological Scientists.
