Prof Birkholtz is a full Professor in Biochemistry a DST/NRF Tier 1 South African Research Chair (SARChI)  in Sustainable Malaria Control (since July 2013). She currently holds a NRF B2 rating (effective 2021-2025) describing ‘Researchers who enjoy considerable international recognition by their peers for the high quality and impact of their recent research outputs’.

Prof Birkholtz holds various research management roles including the management committee of the UP ISMC where she directs the Parasite Cluster & the sub-committee on Chemoprophylatics & Therapeutics (South African Malaria Elimination Committee). She served on council of the South African Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and is a full, elected member of the Academy of Sciences of South Africa, ASSAf. Prof Birkholtz directs a transdisciplinary research platform as a Community of Practice on Evaluating Sustainable Malaria Control Tools  as well as directs the South African Malaria Transmission-blocking Consortium.

She received Exceptional Young Researcher awards (UP; 2010 & 2013), a UP Exceptional Academic Achiever award (2019-2021) and the UP Vice Chancellors Exceptional Supervisor Award in 2018.
