Launch of lesson study in Free State Province

Posted on March 18, 2020

The Free State Department of Education launched the Lesson Study and Dr Sekao was invited to deliver a keynote address. In Figure 1 are the officials from Head Office of Free State Department of Education who organised the launch, Department of Basic Education who are coordinating the Lesson Study nationally, and Dr Sekao from the University of Pretoria.

The delegates (Figure 2) included officials from all education district offices in Free State, mathematics teachers, principals and representatives of teacher unions. Teacher Unions were given a platform to pledge their support for the use of Lesson Study as a model for teacher development.

The highlight of the launch was the post-lesson reflection session (Figure 3) that was held after the lesson was presented to showcase teachers’ newly acquired skills on Lesson Study. It is during the post-lesson reflection where teachers share their views on how and where the lesson needs to be improved. Although all the stages of the Lesson Study cycle are important, the Post-lesson Reflection stage is pivotal to the success of Lesson Study. It was indeed a real milestone to observe teachers make meaningful contributions in this session.
