The Cry of Winnie Mandela

Posted on July 31, 2013

"One bright spring morning finds six women in a rented white Volkswagen Caravelle. When we first see them, they are on the outskirts of Johannesburg. As if to celebrate this early leg of the journey, their driver, in an astonishing soprano, begins the song, Iphi'ndlela, and her passengers pick it up as if they have been waiting for it."

The play is an adaptation of the novel "The Cry of Winnie Mandela" by Njabulo Ndebele. It poignantly narrates the journeys of six South African women. As the audience follow them on their holiday adventure, the stories of how they had to wait for their husbands during Apartheid unfold. Their sharing offers glimpses at the life of South Africa's most well-known woman-in-waiting: Winnie Mandela.
