Background

The Institute performs research on the management of technology and technological innovation, technology policy and related issues.

As the engine of economic growth, technology will play an increasingly important role in nations' ability to prosper and grow. Technological innovation is the mechanism through which technology can be leveraged to create wealth and contribute toward a better quality of life. The University of Pretoria has taken cognisance not only of the increasing importance of technology as a basis for competition, its determining role in international competitiveness and the contribution it can make to the social-related goals of the nation – such as health, housing, infrastructure, education and the environment – but also the increasing need to manage technology strategically and operationally.

Without a strong, vibrant and relevant academic research effort in the management of technology to support and sustain the national innovation strategy, the South African industry will be found wanting in the global competitive arena. In order to embody its commitment in this regard, the University of Pretoria established the Institute for Technological Innovation in the Faculty of Engineering in October 1994.

The placement of the ITI in the Faculty of Engineering not only ensures strong technological expertise to support the innovation and technology management-related research, but also that the engineering staff and students are exposed to and benefit directly form the ITI's activities
