UPCT Celebrates Heritage Month in South Africa

Posted on September 19, 2025

Each year, September allows us to reflect and celebrate the rich culture and diversity that shapes who we are as South Africans. It is not only a time to applaud past traditions and legacies, but also to remind the current and future generations of how heritage continues to make up a large part of our everyday life. Heritage Month also serves as a platform for people to explore their roots and understand events that have influenced their heritage.

Heritage tells us about our ancestry and where we come from. It anchors us in history while guiding us to what is yet to come. When we conserve and protect our heritage, we have some sort of tangible and intangible legacy to pass onto future generations for them to conserve and protect as well. Heritage also acts as a bridge, uniting all South Africans and contributing to the idea of a “Rainbow Nation”. In this fast paced world that is ever changing, heritage reminds us of community and shared humanity. Each September, communities come together to celebrate South Africa’s cultural richness through festivals, music, dance, storytelling, food and art to foster respect and social harmony.

Heritage in tourism brings parts of history to life and allows people from different cultural backgrounds to walk in the footsteps of those before them. Historical landmarks, museums, indigenous storytelling and even culinary traditions foster mutual respect and understanding between people. Through Heritage Month South Africa highlights the importance of inclusivity and representation to remind societies and tourists alike that diversity is our source of strength and creativity. UPCT is proud to celebrate Heritage Month with the rest of South Africa!
