DHHS attends ATLAS conference at Breda, The Netherlands

Posted on July 24, 2024

The annual Association for Tourism and Leisure Education and Research (ATLAS) international conference was held in Breda, Netherlands at the end of June 2024. Again, the Department of Historical and Heritage studies (DHHS) was represented by both Prof Karen L Harris and Mr CR Botha as members of the ATLAS executive board and as conference participants. Besides partaking in the ATLAS board meeting as the coordinators of ATLAS Africa, Harris was also asked by the ATLAS President, Prof Tara Duncan, to do a presentation on ATLAS Africa to the ATLAS members. This presentation reflected on what ATLAS Africa had achieved since Harris and Botha assumed the coordination of ATLAS Africa in 2022. This included two international online conferences, five annual postgraduate webinars by the Heritage and Cultural Tourism Honours students who manage UP Campus Tours, postings on social platforms, guest lectures by members of ATLAS at the DHHS seminar series, a guest edited journal (African Journal of Hospitality Tourism and Leisure) based on an ATLAS Africa conference.

The paper presented in the session on Memory Making by Harris and Botha was entitled “Memory Making with the Domestic Tourism Remodelling Model (DTRM)”. This enhanced and embellished the model developed by Harris and Botha for a research project commissioned by the Department of Tourism in 2022-2203. There was requests for publication and collaboration on this newly devised model. The second paper by Harris in the session on Tourism and Workforce Skills Development was entitled “Acquiring Adaptable Attributes: Upping the skilling of the Tourist Guide”. This also resulted in a request for collaboration for the usage of the skills presented. The conference was held at Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUAS) who showed an interest in further collaboration with the DHHS and UP and the Heritage and Cultural Tourism degrees.
