UPCT embraces outreach!

Posted on March 27, 2024

In an inspiring demonstration of inclusivity and empowerment, the University of Pretoria Campus Tours (UPCT) recently hosted a transformative experience for high school learners from Abba’s Pride. This is a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) that is dedicated to supporting after-school programs in rural areas and underprivileged communities. By opening its doors to prospective students from diverse backgrounds, the University continues to sow the seeds of ambition and inspire the leaders of tomorrow.

On Sunday, 24 March 2024, five honours students of the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies (DHHS) led a tour around the University of Pretoria’s Hatfield Campus for a group of fifty high school learners, accompanied by their leaders from Abba’s Pride. Joshua Brown, the aftercare director of Abba’s Pride, arrived in the afternoon with a bus full of curious pupils. The learners were divided into small groups, with each group led by a dedicated and enthusiastic member of the UPCT team.  The learners eagerly explored the campus, taking in the sights and opportunities that possibly could lay ahead. The prospective students had a chance to learn more about the University, including its history, beautiful buildings, academic opportunities, and extra-curricular activities that are available on campus.

Reflecting on the impact of the experience, the leaders of Abba’s Pride expressed gratitude stating, “This tour has ignited a spark of possibility in our students’ hearts. It is not just about showing them a campus, but it is about showing them endless possibilities that await them.” In the spirit of empowerment, the UPCT looks forward to working with more organisations that strive to bridge divides and uplift minds and communities one tour at a time.

This entire experience has demonstrated UPCT’s success in organising impactful events and providing memorable experiences through interactive and informative tours. Additionally, students expressed interest in a variety of degrees that are offered by the University, including law, medicine, engineering, education, and more. We believe that this exposure has had a meaningful impact on the lives of these young leaders.

To end off with the words of the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Themba Mosia, “Our strength lies in working together to transform the futures of our country, continent, and the world.” This indicates that by joining forces, we can continue making a meaningful impact on individuals and communities, empowering them to realise their potential and contribute positively to society. This also echoes the words of Prof Karen Harris, founder of UPCT, who intimated in class that just by leading a tour you can touch an individual’s life.
