DHHS Hosts Second Annual Postgraduate Workshop

Posted on March 27, 2023

The Department of Heritage and Historical Studies (DHHS) held a Postgraduate Workshop on Saturday, the 25th of March, 2023. The workshop was presented by all the members of DHHS: Professor Harris (HoD), Professor Simpson, Dr Mlombo, Dr Macqueen, Dr Paleker, Professor Nyamunda, Ms Herselman, Mr Botha, and Mr Engelbecht. Topics that were addressed included:  the postgraduate research journey; how to construct a research proposal; the ins and outs of research ethics; how to conduct research;  how to tackle the writing of a literature review; the why and how of referencing; advice on editing and proofreading; as well as some time-management suggestions.

The workshop was highly beneficial and informative overall and addressed concerns and worries that some of the History and Heritage and Cultural Studies Honours students had about writing their research reports. Students were generally grateful to the lecturers for taking time out of their Saturday to host this all-morning workshop and for their willingness to answer endless questions. Thanks were also due to the University of Pretoria’s library staff for accommodating the workshop, as well as to the subject reference librarian, Boitumelo Masilo, who also attended and offered assistance to all the postgraduates as they embarked on their postgraduate studies.

The morning’s deliberations also included a tea break where lecturers and students could mingle informally and enjoy the eats provided by the Honours students and Mr Edwin Smith. All future postgraduate students were encouraged to attend workshops such as this one.
