UP Museums Book Prize awarded to top three honours students

On Friday 12 April 2019 the annual awards ceremony of the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies took place in the Library Auditorium.  As part of this ceremony, three graduating Honours students in the field of Heritage and Cultural Tourism were awarded the UP Museum Book Award. The students, Yolande Meintjes and Nomalungelo Machele both received awards in the category of the “Best Research Report”, while Lesley Carle was distinguished as the “Best UP Campus Tours Tourist Guide”.  Each of the students received a selection of ten book publications from the UP museum collections.

UP Campus Tours is a student tour agency run in its entirety by the honours students in order to teach them in the form of an internship, how to run their own business by offering tours of Hatfield Campus to interested visitors.  Students are required to manage their own finances, organize and market tours as well as book and offer guided tours of not only Hatfield campus, but also the UP Museum galleries on campus. The close collaboration between the UP Campus tours (UPCT) and UP Museums has been a great success for a number of years, assisting the annual 40 000 visitors coming through the UP Museum collections.  In appreciation of the collaborative efforts, the UP Museums annually reward the UPCT honours students who have excelled in their studies. The UP Museums were proud to have the opportunity to contribute to the awards ceremony and continue to support each new cohort of campus tours students.
