Brownell, as former state herald, is an international expert on flags and has received many accolades for his work in this specialised field of vexiollogy. He has published various books and articles on related subjects and addressed countless forums both locally and internationally on the topic. He was also intimately involved in the development of the new Namibian flag and currently still serves on numerous councils regarding heraldic symbols.
