Sustainable project management is becoming increasingly important considering the challenges our society is facing. However, recognising its importance is insufficient. Organisations also need to create a regulatory environment which facilitates and enables the sustainable management of their projects according to principles aligned with the triple bottom line of economic, environmental and social considerations. This presentation elaborates on the need for governance for sustainable project management, what such governance needs to consider and what expertise is required for it. It proposes theoretical approaches for appropriate governance arrangements, identifies suitable governance mechanisms and puts forward the recommendation to establish a project governor with governance and sustainability expertise.
